Islamabad, 26 December 2019: The Women in Media Alliance (WIMA) was launched by women journalists on Tuesday. WIMA has been founded by Tanzeela Mazhar, senior journalist and anchor person and Sadaf Khan, Managing Editor Digital Rights Monitor and Co founder Media Matters for Democracy(MMfD). WIMA seeks to strengthen women networks within the media industry and provide them with resources and opportunities to build their skills.
WIMA’s advisory board includes senior women journalists Naseem Zhehra, Amber Rahim Shami, Afia Salam and feminist writers Benazir Jatoi and Aisha Sarwari.
“ Women in media coming together is important because the media industry throughout the world has been a male dominated industry and it is only through collective efforts that we can reclaim our space and work towards a gender positive industry. WIMA has been confirmed as a collective where all members of the community can both teach, learn and lean upon the combined knowledge and skills of the collective”, says Sadaf Khan.
At the launch even WIMA team shared details of upcoming training sessions and webinars that are being organised in connection with 16 days of activism, including a training on harassment laws and reporting on gender based violence with compassion and sensitivity. The alliance will also be arranging various webinars on how to pitch stories and apply for international grants.
“One of the objectives is to provide a platform to women in media across the country, to share their work and exchange their views on women portrayal on media and gender stereotypes. We also wanted a platform for them to share their work,” said Tanzeela Mazhar. She also added that she had been working for the past three years to bring together women in the media and the alliance was step forward in that direction and would institutionalise those efforts.
The creation of the alliance has been facilitated by Media Matters for Democracy.
